Abbey Road Institute acquires Sydney’s Studios 301

Abbey Road Institute, the famous London facility’s new educational arm, has announced its acquisition of Sydney-based Studios 301, where it will open its second Australian school next year.

Situated in Alexandria – ten minutes from the city centre – Studios 301 Sydney (pictured) will continue offering space to recording artists, but will also become the site for a a full-time Music Production and Sound Engineering programme taking place over 46 weeks, joining Abbey Road’s previously announced Australian Institute in Southbank, Victoria.

The course will be taught by recognised music industry experts, producers and label executives, alongside qualified lecturers, including guest lectures from well-known international engineers and producers.

Originally opened in 1926 and – like Abbey Road itself – founded by EMI, Studios 301 is thought to be the largest recording studio in the southern hemisphere, and has attracted an array of high-profile artists over the years, such as Coldplay, Lady Gaga, U2, David Bowie, Prince, Elton John and Bob Dylan.

Announced back in March, Abbey Road Institute is a global initiative taking place at locations across the UK, Germany and Australia, with international courses due to get underway later this month.

“We are thrilled to be involved in the next chapter of the Studios 301 journey,” said Abbey Road chief executive Paul Ledingham.

“Our team continues to be 100% committed to seeing 301 evolve to meet the needs of the 21st-century music industry. We’ll continue to service our existing clients and pay homage to the incredible legacy that is Studios 301.”

Gianni Michelini, Abbey Road Australia partner, added: "With two such amazing brands sitting across both the education and commercial sides of the music business, we certainly see great synergies."

The new Sydney hub is expected to open its doors in July 2016.
