Brixton to welcome new gig venue

A company named Omni Assets has invested £600,000 to transform Brixton’s The Fridge club into a brand new live music venue, Music Week has reported.

The venue, to be called Electric Brixton, will hold a capacity of over 1,500 people and is set to open later this year. Its development arose in response to the closure of similarly sized, high profile venues, such as the Astoria.

Omni’s operations director Steve Forster, hopes that Electric Brixton will compensate for the closure of such venues. He said: “There simply isn’t a rock venue the size of the Astoria in London anymore, so we’re hoping to fill that gap in the market.”

Forster also confirmed that the venue will be offering favourable deals to existing live music and club promoters. He added: “We’ll promote the odd event in-house, but I don’t think that will be a significant part of our business as there are some fantastic promoters out there who can do a much better job than us – it’s a volume game so we want to be open as much as possible, mixing live with club nights.”
