Celebrating the British Armed Forces’ showmanship and skill, the British Military Tournament is held each year to help raise money for a number of charities including the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, the Royal Navy and Marines Charity, Walking with the Wounded, and ABF the Soldiers Charity.

This year’s event was the most ambitious to date and featured a number of daring stunts including a Lynx helicopter dropping through the ceiling and a giant submarine emerging through the floor.

Delta Sound project manager Mark Sayer has been the lead sound designer for the Tournament each year since its return in 2010.

For this year’s exhibit, Mark worked alongside audio engineers Guy Davies who took care of systems, Phil Wright on FOH and monitors, Adrian Bradley responsible for Pro Tools and playback, and Graham Colley and Steve Cooksey who took care of all communications and radios.

For the main PA, Delta deployed a substantial L-ACOUSTICS system comprising of 12 individual line arrays flown on a central truss which lined the perimeters of the main performance area. This included 8 hangs of 10 KUDO which provided coverage for the main seating areas, supported by 4 hangs of 12 d-VDOSC used for fills. The d-VDOSC arrays were positioned in each corner of the central truss, providing coverage for the smaller seating areas either end of the venue.

Mark chose not to use subs for the event and instead to utilise the full range capacity inherent within the KUDO loudspeakers, powering 2 of the low drivers within each line array. This meant that the engineers were able to generate more than enough clear and transparent low-end sound for the vast arena.

At FOH, Delta supplied and operated a DiGiCo SD5, which was also used to mix the small number of monitor hotspots for the live orchestra and also for the fills which provided coverage for the Royal Box.
