Double Sound Oscars success for ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’

Post-apocalyptic action epic Mad Max: Fury Road won six Academy Awards at LA’s Dolby Theatre last night – more than any other film – including wins in both sound categories.

The evening saw Mark Mangini and David White both receive their first Oscar for Sound Editing – Mangini had been nominated on three previous occasions, for The Fifth Element, Aladdin and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, while White attended the ceremony as a nominee for the first time.

The other movies nominated for quality sound editing were Sicario (Alan Robert Murray); Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Matthew Wood and David Acord); The Martian (Oliver Tarney); and The Revenant (Martin Hernandez and Lon Bender).

The Sound Mixing team of Chris Jenkins, Gregg Rudloff and Ben Osmo were also successful, winning ahead of the sound crews for Bridge of Spies (Andy Nelson, Gary Rydstrom and Drew Kunin); The Martian (Paul Massey, Mark Taylor and Mac Ruth); The Revenant (Jon Taylor, Frank A. Montaño, Randy Thom and Chris Duesterdiek); and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Andy Nelson, Christopher Scarabosio and Stuart Wilson).

Other highlights included a Best Original Score accolade for The Hateful Eight composer Ennio Morricone, a long-awaited first Oscar for Leonardo Di Caprio and a Best Actress Award for Brie Larson, star of Room, which was the focus of our Final Cut feature back in January.
