Frank Serafine’s Sound Advice Tour starts this month

Lasting more than two months and taking in 33 cities across the US and Canada, the upcoming Sound Advice tour will feature a number of workshops hosted by Hollywood sound editor Frank Serafine.

With over 30 years experience in the industry, Serafine has worked on Star Trek, Tron, The Day After and The Hunt for Red October, as well as hundreds of television episodes and commercials.

The events at each venue are split into seven parts:

Sound Recording, covering scouting locations, mic choice and placement, and field and stereo recording in stereo and surround.

Sound Editing will cover audio formats, dialogue editing, ADR, metadata and levelling.

Sound Effects will discuss recording in the field in mono, stereo and surround with live demonstrations, and how to subsequently log your effects.

Soundtrack will address music selection, covering sources, libraries and commissioning on a budget.

Sound Mixing will provide guidance on reverb, delay, distortion and EQ, restoration, normalisation and levelling for final output at 82dB. Automation using faders and a variety of control surfaces will be covered in order to route, bus and mix for 5.1 surround.

Sound Design brings it all together, teaching how to engage and immerse audiences utilising all the skills gained in the previous workshops, including invented audio representations of visual events and adding sound elements in post production.

Finally Sound Inspiration teaches the analysis and dissection of established movies in order to build a new approach to sound design.

"I want to be the conduit for the next generation of filmmakers, not only in Hollywood but nationally. We’re going to take the best of what Hollywood has to offer to the rest of the country," Serafine said of the event.
