From photokinema to Atmos

If you’ve ever been curious about just how much cinema sound has advanced in the past 90 years, Dolby has released a timeline infographic to show you just how far the industry has come.

Starting with the ‘Talkies’ era where early experiments with adding sound to films were split into two camps: adding sound to the film itself, or recording to discs that were played simultaneously, the timeline moves through the ‘Mono’ era through to the ‘Stereo’ and ‘Multichannel’ eras before touching on the company’s latest advancement – object-based audio and Dolby Atmos.
