With its class-leading precision, Lynx’s modern classic Hilo interface is relied on by the Guildhall School of Music and Drama as the stable heart of their audio capture setup…

At the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, impeccable interfacing is required to capture the diverse array of genres, instruments, orchestras and voices. With ten years of excellence under its belt, the Lynx Hilo interface has proven itself as the unrivalled centre of the academic institution’s audio set-up. Serving as both interface, monitor controller and top-tier mix/mastering stereo AD/DA.

The Head of Recording and AV, Julian Hepple has had a lengthy career as a sound engineer and producer, working with the likes of Prince, Robert Glasper and Anoushka Shankar amongst others. Hepple explains why the Hilo is so integral to the school’s recording workflow.

Q: Can you explain to us why the Hilo has become so important to you?

Julian Hepple: We use the Hilo all day and every-day really. The Hilo is a two-channel mastering-grade AD/DA converter and interface. Here at the Guildhall we record so many different genres and styles of music. You could be working on an orchestral recording in the morning, then in the afternoon you could be mastering a house track, then some jazz the next day. I need a two-channel A/D that is just really flexible. I know it will work regardless of genre.

Q: What are some of Hilo’s best qualities?

JH: The great thing about the Lynx Hilo  is that it’s got such a large dynamic range. I know and can guarantee it’ll just be super clean when I need that kind of response from an A/D, but also it can pack a punch. It works really well with more aggressive styles of music, especially if I need that type of big, tight bottom end.

Q: Have you used Lynx products before, and will you continue to use them into the future?

JH: We’ll continue to use Lynx products for a long time I’m sure. We first started working with Lynx products around 15 years ago when the Aurora came out. The 8 and 16 that blew everyone out of the water, and this Hilo really does feel like a mark up on that. It’s just fantastic. When I close my eyes, I’m in the room with the orchestra. We trust Lynx, and will continue to use the Hilo because it really is a great product.
