MPG, APRS pay tribute to Sir George Martin

The Music Producers Guild (MPG) and Association of Professional Recording Services (APRS) have paid tribute to the late, great Sir George Martin, who died at the age of 90 earlier this week.

Best known for the integral part he played in the success of The Beatles – a partnership that revolutionised studio recording and the creative process – Martin had a career spanning seven decades, with 30 Number One hits to his name and over one billion records sold.

In 2013, the Music Producers Guild presented Sir George with its top accolade – the Outstanding Contribution to UK Music Award.

MPG full member Tony Platt said: "Sir George set the tone for record production, and in particular British record production, by putting the artist at the centre of the music making process rather than treating them as a product. He did what he did really well and that made a massive difference to the way in which professional music production developed over subsequent years. He was also a charming and funny man who will be sadly missed.”

The APRS has also released a statement expressing its sadness at the passing of its president:

“We are truly saddened at the loss today of our APRS President, Sir George Martin. George was always a dedicated and loyal supporter of the association and his presence at our annual fellowship lunch was always a highlight of the year.

"George was a true legend of our industry. Without his vision the musical landscape of the UK and indeed the world would have been much poorer.

"Not only did George create much of the music of the seminal sixties but also went on to found Air Studios in London and Montserrat. His expertise encouraged us all who worked with him to produce our finest efforts.

"Our industry owes him a great debt of gratitude for enriching all of our lives and enabling of us to work at something we love.

"Our sincere condolences to Judy and all the family, our thoughts are with you.”
