Pro Sound Awards: Simon Rhodes? efforts noticed

Simon Rhodes has reached the final four in the Studio – Engineer of the Year category of the first Pro Sound Awards, which will take place on 19 September at the Ministry of Sound.

“I was absolutely thrilled to be nominated for Studio – Engineer of the Year,” said Rhodes. “It’s lovely to be honoured at the highest level.”

Rhodes recorded and mixed Tom Newman’s score to Skyfall at Abbey Road Studios. This involved taking Newman’s sketches and recording dozens of “rhythmic, melodic and exotic layers” over the top to create the incredible textures of excitement and colour demanded by Sam Mendes. The orchestra was the last element and Rhodes was asked to mix it into 31 stems, running over three Pro Tools systems.

Rhodes additionally worked on The Hobbit with Howard Shore, doing three films in Paris with Alexandre Desplat and film projects with James Horner, John Debney, George Fenton, Brian Tyler, James Newton Howard and Chris Lennertz. He also squeezed in a couple of classical albums and a video game as well.

Finalists Mark Winterburn, Al O’Connell and Toby Alington complete the Studio – Engineer of the Year category.

The Pro Sound Awards ticket price is just £45.00. Contact Sarah Harris for further information.
