Riedel provides audio system at the Tony Awards

A comprehensive system designed for distributing audio signals and establishing a comms infrastructure at this year’s Tony Awards was provided by Firehouse Productions and Audio Intercom Services.

The production companies came up with a system that comprised a RockNet digital audio network, including Studer Vista 5 console integration, Artist digital matrix intercom and Performer digital partyline from Riedel Communications.

One of the major challenges facing the Tony Awards this year, a large-scale live broadcast production, was the relocation of the ceremony. Usually held at Radio City Hall, this year’s ceremony was moved to the smaller Beacon Theatre. This meant that the equipment that usually would have been installed next to the stage, now had to be installed in trucks and tents outside the venue, resulting in a more complex setup.

For live and broadcast audio distribution, New York-based company Firehouse Productions used a 154 channel Riedel RockNet system. At the centre of the installation were two Studer Vista 5 digital mixing consoles serving as FoH and monitor mixers. Four RockNet RN.343.VIs integrated the consoles into the digital audio network, providing remote control over the RockNet inputs and outputs.

Onstage, 18 RockNet microphone input modules were used. With limited backstage space available for monitoring, Firehouse Productions deployed ‘Engine 1’, a specially equipped, double-expanding 48-foot semi-trailer production audio unit parked outside the theatre.
