School of Sound’s International Symposium line-up revealed

School of Sound has announced its masterclass schedule for the 2015 International Symposium event at London’s Southbank Centre from 8 – 11 April.

The event promises to encourage a cross-disciplinary approach to using sound in the arts and media through a series of seminars, workshops and performances hosted by skilled figures in the pro-audio and media industries. The wide range of topics cover the film, games, documentary sound, dance, installation, folk sound, listening, theatre and opera, radio and composition disciplines. 

Renowned foley artist Nicolas Becker (GravityWuthering Heights) will present a session at 1:30pm on the Wednesday (8 April) describing his techniques and methods while reflecting on how he uses complex technology to realise his artistic vision.

On Friday 10 April at 10am, Kristian Selin Eidnes Andersen, sound designer and composer on several celebrated European films from the past two decades, will talk about collaborating with the likes of Lars von Trier (Antichrist, Melancholia, Nymphomaniac); Nicholas Winding Refn (Only God Forgives), Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt) and, most recently, Per-Olav Sørensen (The Heavy Water War), discussing the ways he works with directors during the earlier stages of production.

There will also be focus on the game audio sector with a series of sessions on the Friday, beginning at 2:15pm with a session from composer, Games Music Connect founder and sound creative John Broomhall (Forza Motorsport 5, X-Com, Transport Tycoon), who will explore the ways sound is evolving across interactive entertainment.

Martin Stig Andersen, sound designer for the acclaimed Limbo by Playdead will analyse his techniques for creating soundtracks in the indie-game environment, before looking forward to his next release, Inside, while Joanna Orland, senior sound designer at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (Wonderbook, Diggs Nightcrawler and Project Morpheus) will discuss the level of research and conceptualisation required for AAA games.

And anticipations are building for Saturday at 10am, where Walter Murch, Oscar-winning editor and sound designer of Apocalypse Now, The Godfather and The English Patient will explore the relationships between ‘theatrical’ and ‘documentary’ sound, utilising exmaples from his work on Phil Kaufman’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Terry Zwigoff’s Crumb, and Mark Levinson’s recent Particle Fever.
