Tannoy QFlex provides sound solution for Berlin town hall

Tannoy‘s QFlex system has been used to solve an acoustic problem in the town hall of Mid-Berlin, Germany.

The main hall where meetings between district delegates are held previously suffered from high reverberation times, with large windows and solid surfaces leading to poor intelligibility for members. The administrative office issued a mandate to consultants Akustikbüro Krämer & Stegmaier GmbH, asking the firm to find a solution to the problem.

Krämer & Stegmaier knew that digital beam-steering would solve the issue at the Mid-Berlin town hall, and were contemplating using a particular brand that they had tried before. They were then approached by Gerd Thielemann – general manager and project engineer for Systemintegration Berlin – who recommended Tannoy’s award-winning digital beam steering range, QFlex.

QFlex uses an advanced beam-steering algorithm that allows precise control over the throw of the loudspeaker. Users can focus the sound on the seats and away from the ceiling, walls and partitions, reducing reverberation times without the need for acoustic dampening treatments.

With all the data available, Krämer & Stegmaier simulated different approaches using CATT-Acoustic software. Based on the results, the decision was made to go with the QFlex 24, which is now being used in an arrangement with three Kling & Freitag CA 106s for monitoring.

“Tannoy’s QFlex is performing excellent in the space. The hall has a lot of glass and reverberant surfaces, and the precise beam-steering technology available from Tannoy allows us to avoid reflections,” said Gerd Thielemann.
