U2 master tapes under threat from Dublin studio expansion

Irish studio Windmill Lane has urged artists who have recorded there to come forward and claim their master tapes or face having them destroyed, RTE has reported.

The recording facility has accumulated a vast library of master tapes over the years from U2, AC/DC, The Cranberries, Spice Girls and many more, and is now looking to expand. However, valuable space is being taken up by the tapes, with Windmill Lane’s new owners, Pulse Recording College, warning that they will be destroyed if not collected soon.

"We’re appealing to any artists who’ve worked here using two-inch multitrack tapes to come in and reclaim them because we’re in the process of disposing of these tapes," Ian Brady of Pulse told RTÉ Ten.

"There’s a lot of stuff here of huge historical interest by the likes of U2, Riverdance, AC/DC and The Chieftains but the tapes can weight tonnes and they occupy valuable space. It they’re not reclaimed, they will be disposed of."

The clear-out will commence on May 7th 2013.
