British Broadcast: JoeCo

With BVE 2015 set to open tomorrow, Audio Media International is speaking to a number of UK pro-audio companies within the broadcast sector this week and quizzing them on several topics.

Joe Bull, managing director at JoeCo describes the current market as ‘reasonable’, but says broadcasters are having to cope with a number of challenges. “There’s maybe a slightly greater concentration on delivery mechanisms at present rather than high-quality acquisition. This probably reflects the broadcasters’ needs to milk all they can from sunk costs of existing programmes rather than developing new ones for future growth.”

“The market has been affected by the economic downturn for some time,” Bull continues. “Public sector broadcasters have their budgets hacked by interfering governments while the commercial sector is understandably affected by incoming advertising revenues.”

But as a young company, founded in 2008, JoeCo has not suffered like many others: “JoeCo was founded at the start of the banking crisis so we’ve grown during the recession and will continue to do so as the economy recovers.”

This stability has been enabled by its ability to deliver to key markets within the sector: “JoeCo products have been popular for some years in sectors where there’s no second chance and which rely on long form recordings,” Bull explains. “Reality TV and sports have been key markets especially with large worldwide events like last summer’s events in Brazil.”

“Our MADI and analogue systems are very popular in broadcast – anywhere space is at a premium, such as OB vans, appreciate the small footprint and high track count of JoeCo BlackBox Recorders. The ability to just record continuously for 24 hours or more is also unique. With the BBR1MP, our new 24-channel system with integrated mic preamps, we’re able to save even more space effectively giving users an OB van in a backpack.”

Alongside this, Bull states that the key to success within the sector is the cultivation of a quality product offering: “In JoeCo we always place quality first. It’s pointless developing products that encourage a headlong plummet towards mediocrity as it will inevitably affect your clients’ output and gradually lead to them finding it more difficult to resell their programmes."

And in line with this, JoeCo’s future is clearly defined: “We will continue to concentrate our design efforts on quality products,” Bull concludes.
