Drum expert Matt Brown praises Telefunken mics

Producer, engineer, drummer, drum technician, and arranger Matt Brown has praised Telefunken microphones after using them to create a video for his new drum course, which is being released this month through URM Academy.

"I used all the Telefunken mics I have throughout the video and described them as my favourite go-to’s because of how great they sound,” said Brown. “I’ve been using the M82, M80, M60 FETs, and large diaphragm Copperhead condensers for years now; but they can still take me by surprise when I first pull up the mic."

Brown was born in Jacksonville, Florida to a musical family and at the age of three started playing drums. By the age of 15, Matt was engineering and editing at his father’s recording studio. He continued developing his drumming skills while learning how to produce, engineer, edit and record.

His professional drumming career however began at Walt Disney World while attending the University of Central Florida as a percussion major.

Brown now freelances as a studio drummer, producer, recording engineer, and ProTools editor, and has played sessions for major record labels and corporate publishing projects.

"I just had another one of those surprising moments yesterday on a drum session with all of those mics in use — M82 on kick, M80 on snare, M60’s on overheads and the Copperhead CU-29s on room duty,” he added. “I pulled up the faders and without any EQ and minimal compression on the rooms, the drum tone blew away my clients and just made me smile. And I just tried the M81-SH’s on toms this week and they are definitely the next addition to my mic locker. Just killer."
