MPG and Legacy Studios plan series of production seminars

The MPG, in conjunction with Legacy Studios in The Netherlands, has launched a series of production seminars that will run throughout 2013.

A trial workshop, which featured producer and engineer Tony Platt, took place in late December 2012 (pictured) and was attended by an enthusiastic audience of producers, engineers, label managers, artists and students.

The morning session was held in Legacy Studios’ recording room and was attended by over 35 delegates, while the afternoon session took place in the control room, but was limited to ten.

In the morning, Legacy’s Joram Pinxteren conducted a face-to-face interview with Platt, in which he discussed his philosophy of production, engineering and music, and told a number of anecdotes. Platt used examples of ProTools sessions to explain particular techniques and demonstrate his answers to questions. In the afternoon, Platt addressed a drum recording problem that was previously faced by an engineer at the studio, which saw the group set up a kit and explore different approaches to recording it.

Participants were also offered advice on some of the projects they were currently working on.

Commenting on the event, Joram Pinxteren said: "It was very inspiring to hear Tony share some of the secrets behind his iconic work in the past and his views on the future. Everybody will work a little differently after hearing the finer details about his recording approach.”

Adam Bar-Pereg, a producer/songwriter from The Netherlands who added the event, added: “In The Netherlands, the possibilities of meeting a top producer from abroad are practically nil, but through the efforts of Legacy Studios and the Music Producers Guild I not only met one of my heroes, but also got the chance to hear his stories and get personal advice on a number of topics. It was a great learning experience and a great social experience as well."

The next seminar takes place in early March, and will feature Gareth Jones. Those wishing to attend should check Legacy Studios’ website here for more details.
