NAMM 2013: Telefunken to showcase M82 dynamic microphone

Telefunken will unveil its new M82 end-address dynamic microphone at this year’s NAMM Show.

Hand-assembled and tested at the company’s American factory, the mic is best suited to kick drum applications, but will also achieve results when used for miking vocals, guitars and other instruments.

It features a large 35mm diaphragm and two separate EQ switches – Kick EQ and High Boost – which function independently of each other, resulting in four unique settings. This allows the user to tailor the M82’s response to the source easily.

Intended primarily for kick drum use, the Kick EQ switch activates a passive filter that cuts out a portion of the lower mid-range frequencies that are often cut when processing kick drums.

The High Boost switch tilts the upper mid-range and high frequencies, which enables greater beater attack when placed inside a kick drum. This feature therefore lets the engineer achieve a wide variety of sounds, ranging from vintage-style to modern. When used with vocals or guitar amps, the High Boost provides increased articulation and "airiness" in the upper register.

The M82, which begins shipping in February, comes with a stand mount adaptor and protective zipper case, while and optional elastic suspension mount is also available.
