Red Bull Studios’ #NormalNotNovelty to pick up Campaign Award at 2018 Pro Sound Awards

AMI sister title PSNEurope has announced Red Bull Studios’ #NormalNotNovelty campaign as the winner of the Campaign Award ahead of the 2018 Pro Sound Awards, which take place at London’s Steel Yard on Thursday, November 22.

A brand new award for 2018, the Campaign Awards recognises a campaign or initiative that has made a significant, positive impact on working practices and helped promote equality across the professional audio industry.

Over the past 12 months, Red Bull Studios’ #NormalNotNovelty campaign has not only highlighted the gender imbalance that still exists within the industry, but has also provided a hub for women working in the industry, or looking to start a career in the studio sector, to network and exchange ideas, as well as raising the profile of those doing great work in the industry.

Throughout the year, the campaign has held monthly #NormalNotNovelty gatherings, featuring workshops on a multitude of studio disciplines, live demonstrations from studio professionals and panels sessions and interviews with some of the world’s most talented, DJs, engineers and producers.

These sessions have delivered tangible career benefits for many of those involved, as producer, artist and regular #NormalNotNovelty host K-Minor explained to PSNEurope earlier this year: “A friend of mine brought the first Normal Not Novelty night to my attention and I thought it sounded like a great thing to go along to. I went to the first one and left feeling overwhelmed. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my life. I know that’s a lot to say, but I’d never been in an environment before where there were so many different women, no ageism, no racism, no classism.

"The level of support felt in that environment was amazing. Having gone along as a spectator, I approached Brendon Harding (head engineer, Red Bull Studios) and let him know how much I felt what he was doing and that I would love to get involved in any way possible, because I was so taken aback by it all. I’ve been to a lot of female events but nothing had felt like this. It has something special. So, I got a call from him before the next session saying, Do you fancy hosting one of the production workshops? And I haven’t looked back since. I now host the electronic workshops for Normal Not Novelty every month.”

The Campaign Award will be presented to Red Bull Studios’ #NormalNotNovelty representatives at the Pro Sound Awards ceremony on November 22.
