Telefunken to feature at SXSW Gear Expo and concert venues

Telefunken will be heavily involved with this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, where it will take part in the annual Gear Expo and see a variety of its mics used at gig venues across the city.

The microphone manufacturer has partnered with The Continental Club, which is set to equip its entire main stage equipped with the company’s products, including the M80, M81 and M82 dynamics, in addition to DD5 Dynamic Drum sets.

Charles Twilling, FOH engineer for singer-songwriter and former guitarist for The Black Crowes Jackie Greene, who will be play the Club on Thursday (19 March), said: "Everything good needs an excellent beginning. As a touring sound engineer, that perfect beginning starts with my Telefunkens."

The Continental Club’s production manager and Nomad Sound’s lead engineer Jamie Wellwarth, added: "Telefunken has changed the whole sound of the Continental Club. Their M80 and M81 dynamic mics have brought out a clarity to the vocals that we just didn’t have before. It’s great working with Tfunk, because we are going for the same thing – great sound in a rockin’ nightclub."

In addition, Telefunken has teamed up with Austin-based audio production company Nomad Sound, which will provide dynamic microphones for additional outdoor stages throughout SXSW.

Also set to perform are Brooklyn band Rubblebucket, who completed their new album Survival Sounds utilising two large diaphragm tube mics from Telefunken, the AK-47 MkII and the CU-29 Copperhead.

Mathew Scheiner, the group’s FOH engineer and tour manager commented: "Telefunken’s M81 dynamic is the first mic we’ve come across that allows vocals to cut through the rest of the seven-piece band without being too harsh up top, and still preserve a really healthy amount of body."

Lastly, Telefunken microphones will be used for the SXSW tapings of Jimmy Kimmel Live (JKL). Audio engineer Bart Chiate remarked: "The Telefunken M80s are my go-to mics for the live performances on JKL. But with the show happening in Austin it wasn’t logistically possible for us to bring our own mics, so we reached out to Tfunk and they fixed us up with all the mics we need for our crew at the festival. It’s gonna be a blast, especially since we know we have the sound totally nailed."
