SSE founders net EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award

SSE Audio Group founding directors, John and Heather Penn, have won a prestigious award in the Business Products and Services category at the UK finals of EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2016.

The judges described SSE Audio Group as “one of the most respected companies in the field, having turned their hobby into a business by matching their undoubted technical expertise with true entrepreneurial spirit.” The judges also emphasised the fact that the pair continue to innovate with ground-breaking technology and breaking into new markets.

This year’s awards ceremony took place on Monday 3 October 2016 at The Brewery in the City of London. Having already won a Midlands regional award in June, John and Heather were then judged on the national stage and invited to attend the London event.

The winners were judged on their entrepreneurial spirit, financial performance, innovation, national and global impact, strategic direction, personal integrity and influence.

Now in its 30th year globally and 18th in the UK, Entrepreneur Of The Year celebrates the spirit and contribution of exceptional entrepreneurs who can see the future, and through their entrepreneurial businesses, are helping to reshape it.

"We have been surprised at every step of the way in this process,” said SSE managing director John Penn. “After the initial judging stage, we were selected to be one of 40 firms that went before a panel in May and the outcome of this was announced in June, where we were one of the five regional award winners – each in different market sectors.

“This in itself was very gratifying to be recognised at that level, and we really had no expectations of it going any further. However all UK regional winners were then invited to a further round of judging in London, in early September. The results of this process were then revealed at last Monday’s dinner, and when we were announced as national winners in our sector we were incredulous!”

SSE director Heather Penn added: “Over the decades, the UK music and creative industries have delivered a great deal to the UK economy and we are delighted to be acknowledged as part of this. Who would have thought that a couple of rock n rollers could win such a prestigious business award!"
