VDC cables picked for FINA World Aquatics Championships

A fibre optic setup from VDC Trading was chosen to support a Nexo-based sound system and a 180sqm videowall at the 17th FINA World Championships, which recently took place in Budapest and Balatonfüred in Hungary.

The 2017 championships was the largest sporting showcase Hungary has ever hosted, lining up almost 3,000 athletes from over 180 nations in six different disciplines – swimming, diving, water polo, openwater, synchronised swimming and high diving.

The event kicked off with a two-hour opening ceremony set across the Danube, Budapest’s Chain Bridge and the Castle on the Buda side of the river. More than 500 dancers and artists as well as a host of volunteers took part in the ceremony accompanied by a display of light and sound, including underwater projections and lasers. Budapest’s GEM Rendezvenytechnikai KFT was called in to design the audio infrastructure for the event.

In total 5.2km of fibre optical cable from Van Damme and Neutrik, along with 600m of Van Damme’s TourCat cable were installed for the event.

“I have known VDC and the Van Damme brand for many years and have used the cables on much of our installation work as well as events with great success,” said Krisztian Pinter, GEM’s technical manager. “We invested in more cable last year and will be doing the same this year as demand continues to grow.”

The opening ceremony was hailed as a great success at a sporting event that will surely go down in history, with national and world records tumbling and the UK’s Adam Peaty helping Team GB end the championships with seven medals.
