Celebrating Cinema Audio

The 49th Annual Cinema Audio Society Awards took place on 18 February at the Crystal Ballroom in Los Angeles’ Millenium Biltmore Hotel. The Les Miserables team – Simon Hayes, Andy Nelson, Mark Paterson, Jonathan Allen, Robert Edwards and Pete Smith – took the award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for a Motion Picture – Live Action, while the newly added category of Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for a Motion Picture – Animated was won by the sound mixing team who worked on Pixar’s Brave, which included Bobby Johnson, Tom Johnson, Gary Rydstrom, Andrew Dudman and Frank Rinella.

Production Sound Mixer Chris Newman was presented with the CAS Career Achievement Award, while director Jonathan Demme was given the CAS Filmmaker Award.

Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for a Television Movie or Mini-Series went to the sound mixing team on Hatfields and McCoys – Dragos Stanomir, Christian Cooke, Brad Zoern, Jeffrey A. Vaughn, Eric Apps and Peter Persaud.

Larry Long, Nello Torri, Alan M. Decker, Paul Drenning and Shawn Kennelly took the award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for Television Series – One Hour for their work on Homeland: Beirut is Back. Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for Television Series – Half Hour was awarded to Modern Family: Disneyland and the sound mixing team of Stephen A. Tibbo, Dean Okrand and Brian R. Harman. Brian Riordan and Jamie Ledner’s work on the 2012 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony earned them the award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for Television Non Fiction, Variety or Music – Series or Specials.

The winner of the CAS Technical Achievement Awards for Production was Sound Devices, for the 664 Field Production Mixer with Recorder; and for Post Production, Dolby Atmos.
