Rising Stars: Luca Romani

Audio Pro International is giving pro audio’s budding audio technicians and engineers the chance to promote themselves to the industry via a new regular column, Rising Stars.

The series begins with a chat with freelance engineer Luca Romani…

Where did you study?

I studied audio engineering at London’s Alchemea college of audio engineering and production.

Which band/project are you currently working on?

At the moment I am not working with a specific band or on a specific project, but I am looking forward to meeting more bands this year and hope to get a small tour together in 2012.

Where are you based/working at the moment?

I am currently based in central London as one of the sound engineers at Village Underground, and I am also doing a monthly gig at the Betsey Trotwood for the charity Music Earth Rise.

Which audio console are you utilising? And how many channels?

I tend to use an Avid Venue Profile for FOH and a Yamaha LS9 for monitors. When I am working at Village Underground, the amount of channels can vary quite a lot due to the diverse nature of the gigs that they host. If I remember correctly, I have used up to 24. On some occasions I found myself using more output than input.

What decision process was behind the choice of this console?

Well, when I have the choice, it comes down to where I can place myself with the desk. If it is a rave or a band night I always go for the Avid Profile, as it sounds better and is very easy to operate.

Do you utilise any outboard effects/EQ, and if so, what are they used on and why?

I don’t have the pleasure to use any outboard gear at the moment, although I do use plug-in’s on the Profile and usually some standard filters on the PA. Also, when I have the time during sound check, I like to throw in some tape saturation plug-in’s to give it a bit of the analogue sound.

What is your console of choice?

At the moment it has to be the Profile. This is because I use it the most and I can only compare it to the LS9, but I can’t wait to hear and use the Midas Pro2 and Pro6 consoles in the future.
